We all love dishing out on the differences between eCommerce platforms like Shopify and WooCommerce.
First off, let’s look at some numbers: Among eCommerce platforms,
WooCommerce takes the number one spot at 65% of the market share.
Shopify only holds about 17% of the same market.
Another interesting statistic is that Shopify stores bring in more traffic in total, but WooCommerce stores bring in more revenue! (Ponder on that thought for a minute).
What does this mean?
It means that WooCommerce is used by bigger and richer companies.
I do understand the appeal that Shopify offers, but in all honestly, serious businesses tend to rely more on WooCommerce than Shopify.
Let’s look at the list of features and how both of these guys compare:
Speed:
both score really well on these. Provided you have a good hosting provider for your WooCommerce store.
Flexibility:
both are very mobile friendly and very flexible in terms of customizations.
WooCommerce has tens of thousands of available themes.
Integrations:
Both are very good when it comes to integrations.
The Shopify app store has more than 10,000 apps, so any tool you use or want to integrate should be easy to find. Same goes for the plugins for WooCommerce.
Email Marketing Ease of Setup:
All major email marketing tools have direct API or plugin integrations with WooCommerce and the same goes for Shopify as well.
SEO:
This one is where things change. Optimizing your product pages on Shopify for search engines can be a bit tricky and complicated.
That’s not the case for WooCommerce, and that’s why I always recommend WooCommerce for people who want to fully benefit from SEO without hiring a developer to make simple changes to their store.
If you’re operating a store that sells more than 5 products (which is most of the stores out there), I suggest you go with WooCommerce.
Pricing:
This one is also very different, Shopify might be easy to use and convenient, but it ends up being more expensive.
Conclusion,
If you’re serious about your business, go with WooCommerce.
It helps when you can secure more than one traffic source and SEO happens to be one very important traffic source that should NOT be ignored.
